What is the Backseat Rally?
The Backseat Rally is an annual hitchhiking race. Its inaugural event took hitchhikers from Istanbul to Tbilisi in 2023, which raised over €1,500 for charity. This year, it will take participants around the island of Sicily, Italy, getting participants to experience adventure, culture, and camaraderie.
When will it take place?
The Backseat Rally 2024 will take place 30th of July to the 7th of August.
Each team can choose their pace (if they manage to regularly catch lifts – of which we’re sure they will), but there’s a catch: They have to solve daily challenges to collect points to avoid elimination.
These challenges are supposed to be fun and entertaining, while also engaging participants with local culture. We are really looking forward to seeing someone organize an impromptu dinner party with the locals!
Where will participants sleep?
As much as it’d be great to have everyone be cozied up in a bed each night – that wouldn’t be a true adventure. Our participants will have to set up camp for each night or find a generous host to take them in. They can also consider other accommodation, but have to keep their budget in mind.
Is it safe to hitchhike in Italy/Sicily?
With basic precautions and common sense, hitchhiking anywhere can be safe and enjoyable. It’s essential to exercise common sense, stick to well-lit and populated areas, and to trust your instincts when accepting rides. While incidents can occur anywhere, many travellers hitchhike successfully in Italy without encountering any major issues. Furthermore, we provide as much advice to participants as we can regarding the journey and remain in regular contact with participants.
What about medical emergencies?
Participants are advised to carry travel insurance that includes medical coverage in case of emergencies. They will also be provided a first-aid kit sponsored by our partners at Söhngen.
